About Kenning

Kenning is a free, independent directory of AI tools. Every tool is scored on published evidence, so you can see what it does, what it costs and what it does with your data before you sign up.

About our name

A kenning is a figure of speech from Old Norse and Old English poetry: a short phrase that names something by describing it. The sea was the whale-road or the swan-road. The sun was God's beacon. The word comes from the Old Norse kenna, to perceive, to know, to name (Britannica).

That's the job we set ourselves. AI tools come wrapped in hype and jargon. We describe each one plainly and say whether it's worth your time.

How we score

Each scored tool gets 1 to 5 on five things, for a total out of 25: usefulness, ease of use, value for money, privacy and trust, and momentum. A total of 12 or less is marked not recommended.

Every score has a one-line reason with a source. Scores come from published evidence, such as official pages, store ratings, press reviews and what reviewers say online, not lab tests. We check them again when prices or products change. The full method.

How we make money

Kenning is free to use. Some links to tools are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up. That never changes a score, and tools without affiliate programmes are scored the same way.
