An AI lab is a group organised to research and build artificial-intelligence systems. Its work might cover language, vision, robotics, scientific discovery, safety or the computing needed to train models12.

The name does not describe one legal structure or a fixed size. A lab can be a university department, a company research group or an independent organisation. Some publish papers and release code; others keep much of their research private or connect it directly to products12.

Researchers in a lab usually propose a problem, collect or create data, train or test systems, measure results and study limitations. Modern labs may include engineers, scientists, product specialists, policy experts and safety researchers, rather than only people who write algorithms2.

The term appears in names such as MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, founded as an AI project in 1959, and Google DeepMind, which describes itself as bringing together the DeepMind and Google Brain labs12. An AI lab is not automatically a university, a startup, an AI model or a guarantee that every claim made about its work is independently verified.

Example

A university AI lab might train a vision model to spot defects in crops, publish how it tested the model, and work with farmers to learn where it fails.

Why it matters

Knowing what an AI lab is helps readers distinguish the people and organisation doing research from the model, app or company that later uses it.

Questions people ask

What does an AI lab do?

It researches and develops AI methods or systems. Depending on its mission, it may publish papers, train models, build demonstrations, support products or study safety and social effects12.

Is an AI lab the same as an AI company?

No. A company may contain an AI lab, but an AI lab can also belong to a university or another organisation. The lab describes a research group, not necessarily the organisation's business model1.

What is a frontier AI lab?

It is an informal term for a lab working on highly capable, general-purpose or otherwise leading AI systems. It is not a universal legal category, so the label should be treated as a description rather than a certification.
