AI wrapper

In short

An AI wrapper is a product built on another company’s AI model, usually through an API, with an interface, workflow or specialist data added on top1. The label can be neutral or dismissive, depending on how much value the product adds.

An AI wrapper sends a user’s request to an existing foundation model through an API rather than training a model from scratch2. It may add prompts, company documents, search, safety checks, formatting, model selection or actions in other software1.

The phrase is often used as criticism when a product is little more than a new screen around a chatbot. That criticism points to real risks: the model provider can change its prices, remove an API feature or ship a similar feature itself1. But the label does not prove that a product is shallow. A wrapper can contain specialist workflows, domain knowledge, original data and integrations that are difficult to replace1.

An AI wrapper is not the same as a fine-tuned model. A wrapper changes the application around the model, while fine-tuning changes model weights using additional training data. A company can use both, but neither term by itself says whether the product is accurate, secure or commercially durable1.

Wrappers appear in writing tools, legal software, customer-support systems, coding products and internal company assistants. A typical request may be checked, enriched with relevant documents, routed to a model, filtered and returned in a format designed for a particular job1.

Example

A contract-review app might send a lawyer’s question to GPT or Claude, add the firm’s approved clauses, return a table of risks and save the result in the firm’s case system. The model is external, but the workflow is the app’s product1.

Why it matters

Many AI products are built this way, so the phrase helps explain where their capabilities and risks come from. It also warns buyers to ask what remains valuable if the underlying model improves or its price changes.

Questions people ask

Is an AI wrapper a bad thing?

No. It describes an architecture, not a quality score. A thin wrapper may be easy to copy, while a specialised product can add valuable workflows, data, controls and integrations1.

Is an AI wrapper the same as a chatbot?

No. A chatbot is an interface for conversation. An AI wrapper is a product built around an external model and may be a chatbot, a document tool, a coding tool or an automated workflow1.

Can an AI wrapper become a durable business?

It can, if it builds advantages beyond access to the model, such as proprietary data, specialised knowledge or deep workflow integration. A product that adds only a small feature may be vulnerable to the model provider copying it1.
