Seed (image generation)
In short
An image seed is a number that sets the starting noise for an AI image. Keeping it and the other settings the same can reproduce an output, while changing it creates another variation12.

Image generators begin from a pattern of random-looking noise and gradually turn it into an image. A seed is the number used to choose that starting pattern1. It is a control value, not a description of the subject.
With the same seed, prompt, model and other inputs, some systems can return the same image. Google documents this as deterministic generation in Imagen, while Midjourney says seeds help with consistency but are not a guarantee when settings or model versions change12.
A seed does not save the image, the prompt, a style or a character. It also does not make two different models produce the same picture. A seed only has meaning within the generator and settings that use it2.
People use seeds when testing prompt changes, comparing settings or making small variations. Midjourney accepts a whole-number seed with `--seed`; other services expose it as an API field23.
Example
You generate a picture of a red bicycle in a park, record its seed, then change only ‘red’ to ‘blue’. Keeping the seed makes the comparison more controlled, although the result can still change if the model or settings change23.
Why it matters
A seed makes image experiments easier to repeat and compare. It is useful for iteration, but it is not a permanent fingerprint for an image12.
Questions people ask
Does the same image seed always make the same image?
Only when the relevant inputs stay the same and the service supports deterministic seeds. Google says the same Imagen inputs and seed produce the same output, while Midjourney warns that model versions and setting changes can affect results12.
Does a seed control the image style?
No. It selects the starting noise. The prompt, model and other generation settings control the requested content and style; Midjourney specifically says seeds do not bookmark a style, character or appearance across prompts2.
