Arthur Mensch is the co-founder and chief executive of Mistral AI, a French AI company. He left Google DeepMind in May 2023 and started Mistral with two other founders, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix.1235
Mistral hired its first employee on 5 June 2023, eight days before it announced a seed round. By September 2024 TIME reported a valuation of more than $6 billion.15
From École Polytechnique to a Paris lab
Mensch was in École Polytechnique's X2011 cohort. In May 2015 he started a PhD in the Parietal team at Inria Saclay, and his 2017 NeurIPS paper lists his affiliation as Parietal, NeuroSpin. He defended the thesis on 28 September 2018.2678
A postdoc at the École normale supérieure followed, running from late 2018 to October 2020. His published work from this period includes papers on matrix factorization, such as one on dictionary learning for massive matrices.610121322
Leaving DeepMind to start Mistral
Mensch worked at DeepMind in Paris before founding Mistral, and TIME says he left in May 2023. Mistral dates its own birth to April 2023. The company hired its first employee in June, raised a seed round that month and launched a Series A on 11 December.15
Its first model, a 7B, came out on 27 September 2023. Mistral Large followed on 26 February 2024, the new Le Chat on 6 February 2025 and an OCR product a month later.1
The Microsoft stake
TIME reported that Microsoft paid $16 million for a minority stake in Mistral, and that the deal involved Mistral making its models available to Microsoft's customers in exchange for access to its computing resources. EU lawmakers scrutinised it over possible competition concerns, and AP reported in February 2024 that the European Commission was looking at the agreement.511
Mensch told TIME that Microsoft was one of four cloud providers Mistral used. On 17 May 2024 the UK Competition and Markets Authority decided that the partnership did not qualify for a merger investigation. The outcome of the Commission's own review was not found.51115
Megawatts into intelligence
Speaking to students at École Polytechnique, Mensch described AI as an electrician's job: "transformer des mégawatts en intelligence". He said his generation of engineers had more or less commoditised its own profession, yet that learning to reason still means working without a computer.2
He also said Mistral was launched in France partly because its founders did not fully believe in the technosolutionism fashionable in the western United States. In 2024 he told TIME that regulation should aim less at general-purpose models and more at how other people use them.25
Copyright claims against Mistral
In February 2026 Mediapart alleged that Mistral had used copyright-protected writing to train its model, based on its own extraction tests. It also said it logged more than 2,800 requests from Mistral servers after it banned Mistral's bot, which Mistral says exists to answer users, not to build training sets.16
The publisher Nouveau Monde Éditions asked Mistral for amicable compensation over more than 200 titles, and no court complaint had been filed as of 5 February 2026. Mistral disputes the claims and says its models are trained on public data, licensed datasets and internal data. These claims are made against the company, not Mensch personally.16171819
On the policy side, Siècle Digital reported in June 2026 that Mensch opposes a French bill presuming AI use of copyrighted works and proposes a levy of 1 to 5% of AI firms' revenue into a European creative fund.20
