Study, homework & learning
The UK government's 2025/26 survey found 72.2% of 16 to 19-year-olds who use generative AI use it for studying. The apps here range from Gemini Notebook, which answers only from the notes it is given, to homework solvers that read a photo and return the answer. JCQ treats AI misuse in GCSE and A-level coursework as malpractice, and Gauth's privacy policy lets it train on what pupils upload, so the privacy scores matter here as much as the marks.

Kenning's picks
Ranked by Kenning score out of 25. Tools scoring 12 or less are marked not recommended.
Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)
Gemini Notebook answers from the material it is given and points to the passage it used, which makes checking it quicker than a general chatbot. The free plan allows 100 notebooks of up to 50 sources each, enough for a full GCSE or degree course. individual reviewers still catch it skipping examinable content and misreading sources, so it works best alongside the reading.
Best for Students revising from their own notes and course readings
Duolingo
Duolingo is the most used education app in the UK and every course is free, which makes it the obvious first try for a new language. Reviewers and long-time users agree it builds vocabulary and a daily habit but rarely gets anyone to real conversation on its own. The AI video calls are the one paid extra users say adds actual speaking practice, and the 2025 switch to AI-made lessons still annoys many longtime fans.
Best for Beginners building a daily habit in a new language
Gauth
Gauth reads a photo of a homework question and returns a worked answer in seconds, and testers at ChinaTalk found it right on most high-school maths. It costs £4.99 a month on the UK App Store, far less than general chatbots. The privacy policy lets it train its models on what pupils upload, with no opt-out offered, and data is shared across ByteDance's group, which parents may want to weigh.
Best for Older students checking their own working on maths problems
Gizmo: AI Tutor
Gizmo builds flashcards and quizzes from uploaded notes, slides or a YouTube lecture in seconds, and students in user reviews find it far easier to start with than Anki. The free plan caps quiz mistakes at 15 hearts with a 10-minute lockout, and Unlimited costs £155.22 a year, which Save My Exams found pricier than most rivals it tested. Its privacy notice allows training on user data with no stated opt-out, and AI-made cards still need checking line by line.
Best for Students who want flashcards made from their own notes fast
Quizlet
Quizlet is still the default flashcard app, with a huge library of sets made by other students and AI that turns uploaded notes into cards and practice tests. The free version now runs out fast, with ads and a paywall on repeat Learn and Test rounds, and its Trustpilot score is 1.4. Old exam answers posted by users have landed students in cheating cases, so shared sets need care.
Best for Memorising vocab, definitions and facts for GCSE, A-level or uni exams
Photomath
Photomath turns a photo of a maths question into a worked solution, and Google says the basic step-by-step answers will stay free. It is maths only, and Plus costs £9.99 a month in the UK for animated tutorials and deeper explanations. Common Sense Media flags the obvious risk that pupils copy the working instead of learning it, and some students now use Google Lens or Gemini for the same job.
Best for GCSE pupils and parents checking maths working at home
Seneca
Seneca is the revision platform many UK schools set homework on, and it sits at number 6 in the UK App Store's free education chart. Students in user reviews say it works for memorising science and humanities facts but marks open answers too strictly, and some complain it has filled up with AI. The courses are free, while unlimited exam questions cost from £8.99 a month and the Amelia AI assistant from £14.99.
Best for GCSE pupils drilling science and humanities facts
