Momentum in 2026
5/5

Verdict

The best-selling AI glasses by a long way, and reviewers rate them mainly as a hands-free camera and headphones with Meta AI added on. Owners in user reviews say the AI is clumsy and the battery runs down fast with heavy use. Reports that contractors reviewed intimate footage led to an ICO letter and a US class action that is still open.

What people say

user reviews owners in 2026 like the camera and open-ear audio for music and POV clips but call the AI clumsy and complain about battery life, and several say they use it less than expected. On X the glasses draw bystander objections and coverage of LED tampering. The 4.6 store ratings are for the whole Meta AI app, not the glasses, and sit far above Meta's 1.1 Trustpilot score, where reviewers mention broken glasses and refunds.

“Mostly use them for music and POV photos/videos and they've been great for that. I don't use the AI stuff that much though.”

“The camera quality with the sound quality alone feels like a £500+ product it's really amazing … I bought it for conversation focus but unfortunately it's not supported in UK”

Press reviews

  • Tom's Guide 2025-10-23

Editor's Choice, 'a modest upgrade': better camera and longer battery keep Gen 2 top of its list, though Meta AI uses conversation history for targeted ads.

  • TechRadar (Netherlands edition) 2026-05-21

Keeps Meta at the top of smart glasses with better photo, video and battery, but no revolutionary upgrades; privacy concerns and audio leak at high volume.

Trains on your data
Voice recordings are used to improve Meta products only when voice storage is switched on; Meta told the BBC (via The Register) that it uses contractors to review content people share with Meta AI to improve the glasses. Photos and videos taken without invoking Meta AI stay on the phone.
Opt-out
UK voice notice (effective 22 Jul 2025) lets users turn voice recording storage off in settings, after which recordings are deleted after processing and not reviewed by humans; earlier recordings can be deleted in the Meta AI app. Image analysis requires invoking Meta AI.
Retention
Stored voice recordings kept up to one year; accidental activations deleted within 90 days of detection (Meta AI Glasses Voice Privacy Notice, UK)
Incidents
Mar 2026: Swedish papers SvD and GP reported Kenya-based contractors reviewing intimate glasses footage; the UK ICO called the claims 'concerning' and said it would write to Meta (The Register, 5 Mar 2026). No published ICO outcome found. US class action filed 4 Mar 2026 and consolidated as In re Meta AI Glasses Litigation (N.D. Cal., Judge Edward Chen) with 70+ named plaintiffs alleging footage of users and bystanders was sent to overseas contractors to train Meta AI; untested in court (Insurance Business, 24 Sep 2026). Jul 2026: Meta pushed a mandatory update disabling the camera if the recording LED is tampered with, after WSJ reporting (Joanna Stern on X). Aug 2026: German group HateAid filed a criminal complaint over covert filming. Aug 2026: UK venues incl. Soho House, ATG Theatres and Jeremy King restaurants ask wearers to remove them (The Next Web).

FAQ

Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses need a subscription?

No. They are a one-off purchase from £379 on Meta's UK store, and Meta AI on the glasses is free through the Meta AI app.

Can people tell when the glasses are recording?

A white LED on the frame lights up while the camera records. After WSJ reporting on people covering or drilling out the light, Meta pushed an update in July 2026 that disables the camera if the LED is tampered with.

Does Meta keep what I say to the glasses?

In the UK, voice recording storage is a setting. With it on, recordings are kept for up to a year and may be reviewed by trained staff, and with it off they are deleted after processing.

Are smart glasses allowed in UK pubs and theatres?

There is no UK ban, but some venues set their own rules. Soho House, ATG Theatres and Jeremy King's restaurants ask wearers to take them off, and Wetherspoons bars filming people without consent.

Gen 2 or Gen 3?

Gen 3 launched in September 2026 at £409 with nine hours of battery against Gen 2's eight. Gen 2 is still sold at £379, and user reviews buyers expect price cuts on it.
